Studying Esports at University of Staffordshire means experiencing everything the esports industry has to offer in a cutting edge campus – from production and livestreaming to team management, marketing and developing businesses or organisations, as well as the academic perspectives that define this unique community.
While exploring the nuances of the esports landscape and becoming specialists in the broad Digital Media field, you’ll also explore the impact that esports can have on adjacent industries like TV and film broadcasting, marketing, events management and coaching/performance to ensure that no matter what aspect you find your passion in you’ll be well-placed to succeed in.
Most of our Esports students opt for a placement year, where you’ll have a chance to work in industry before you graduate. Our Placement Team will support you in searching and applying for suitable placements, helping you fain valuable hands-on experience, helping you build industry connections and develop the skills employers are looking for.
The course teaches you a variety of specific and transferable skills, and you can choose from a range of modules across your second and third years to refine your curriculum based on what you find interesting. You can find out how to work across different platforms using industry-standard broadcast technology, get to grips with how to market your events, use data analytics and thrive in roles such as community management, league ops, event management, production/broadcast or marketing, and develop a critical insight into issues facing the multi-million pound global esports industry, including corporate social responsibility, regulation, emerging technologies and the need for innovation which can continue to drive growth.
Throughout your studies you will have opportunities to work on real esports events organised by external companies who use our cutting-edge facilities, either by volunteering at grassroots level LAN events with our long-term collaborators in ESHub and European Halo League, getting hands on experience through our official partnership with EPIC.LAN, at many of the other events we host each year or helping other students with their projects you’ll have plenty to do!
Although gaming skills are not taught on the BA, you’ll get to pursue your passion for playing games through extra-curricular activities. Some of our Esports teams have even been crowned champions. Opportunities include:
-
Joining competitive societies featuring games such as League of Legends, Call of Duty, Valorant, Overwatch and Super Smash Bros
We’ve worked with industry professionals to ensure the course meets their needs and produces graduates with the exact skills they are looking for in applicants. Alongside completing live industry briefs and running your own projects, you’ll look at how to freelance and market your skills to employers. There’s also an option of a placement year, or study exchange with our partner institute in Finland.
